A Story of Love & Devotion for a Dog

Barbara's very first "dog of her own," was a very special Black Labrador Retriever named Captain. Captain began Field Trial training early on and he excelled at it, but at seven months of age, he was diagnosed with severe hip dysplasia. At the time, the surgeries and rehab programs of today did not exist. Captain's case was so severe, Barbara was advised to put him down. While Barbara did not want Captain to suffer, she refused to give up on him and vehemently searched for any and all possible options. Her quest led her to Dr. George, a Veterinarian who was developing a surgery he felt could possibly help. Captain had the surgery. Although Captain came through with flying

colors, the prognosis for a long, pain free life was less than desirable. Finding that prognosis unacceptable, Barbara developed her own rehab program for Captain. For the next three years, Barbara took Captain swimming and to work with her in the Marina every day where he could walk in water that was above his shoulders. Before long he was jumping off the docks and diving under water to catch the "fishies" and/or retrieve rocks. People from all over the world knew him as "that black dog in Florida that dives under water." Captain lived a glorious life of 17 years and never suffered with the pain of Arthritis. Barbara's rehab program was so successful, it prompted further research, testing and technology and became the forefront for the canine Hydrotherapy programs used today.

Giving up is easy. Giving it your all is PRICELESS!
